Cathryn says: Caine is a well-known Sci/Fi author who’s acclaimed Weather Warden series has just released its 7th volume. In this exciting start to a new young adult series Caine introduces us to Clair Danvers a 16-year-old, genius and college freshman who’s being mercilessly tormented by her super popular dorm mates.
Seeking safety Clair answers an ad for a roommate off campus and meets a trio of other outsiders who offer her friendship and protection. It is though her new friends that Clair learns the truth about Morganville; it is completely controlled by vampires. Humans who help and protect the vamps secrets are given protection and everyone else is fair game.
The story escalates as Clair inadvertently draws the attention of several vampires and sets out to make a deal to protect one of her new roommates. Seeking a long lost book, which the vampires can’t read but would do anything to get, brings the story to a head and leads to a showdown with some of the town leaders. Be prepared Glass Houses ends with a sudden cliffhanger, but luckily Dead Girl’s Dance is readily available.
Clair is very smart but somewhat immature, which adds greatly to her liability, while smart enough to figure things out she is not mature enough to think things though. The other occupants of Glass House, Goth girl Eve, slacker Shane and nocturnal musician Michael are all endearing in their own way yet each has their own secrets that are reveled throughout the book.
There is some violence, mild swearing and a couple of references to underage drinking but on a whole I found the themes of the story; friendship, problem solving and protecting each other, outweigh any concerns over these issues.
